Announcing WCCF’s February Athlete of the Month, Chandra McDonald! Chandra attended the first ever Intro Session we had at 475 Church St. and has been a member ever since! As one of our longest tenured members, Chandra has been a regular attendee at every different class time, making friends with literally every single member of our community. Whether she likes it or not, everyone at WCCF now calls her “Shandy.”
How did you get involved in CrossFit? What was your first WOD/experience?
I had been hearing about CrossFit for a while especially because my family lives in Santa Cruz, CA where CrossFit is extremely popular. I knew it was something I wanted to try so when Whaling City opened up in New Bedford I was thrilled! My first WOD was during an intro class and I think it consisted of an AMRAP of air squats, push ups and sit ups. Sounds simple enough but that first WOD killed me!
When did you start coming to Whaling City CrossFit?
Is this the first CrossFit you’ve worked out at / how long have you been CrossFitting for?
WCCF was the first place I did CrossFit. I’ve been there for just under two years.
When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?
Immediately. That first day. When I arrived at the gym, Tess and Erik were so welcoming and I was really excited that they were dog lovers and that Gracie would be hanging out with us while we worked out! Even though that workout killed me, I knew I wanted more. I wanted to get better and stronger. I wanted to try new things and achieve something better when it came to fitness. I knew I was in the right place!
What is your favorite aspect of CrossFit?
I really love the community. I know that sounds cliche. But I never saw myself as a “group workout” person. I never took one group class at any of the globo gyms I’ve attended. I liked to keep to myself while working out. I never could have imagined that the community would become my favorite part of CrossFit. When you have such an awesome community like we do at WCCF, I guess it’s obvious why that’s my favorite aspect. I’ve worked out at other CrossFit gyms while traveling and have felt that community aspect on a broader scale. Only other CrossFitters truly understand what it’s all about and that makes us all a part of a much larger community that extends way beyond just our gym.
What are your short-term and long-term CrossFit goals?
Well…I would love to get a muscle up one of these days. I’d like to make that a short term goal. As far as long term, I’d like to improve my endurance, and I really have to be better about mobility!!
What is your biggest accomplishment?
I think my biggest accomplishment was participating in the Open last year. I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to get through, but I ended up being really happy with my results!
How has CrossFit changed your view on health and wellness?
CrossFit has taught me that I am physically and mentally capable of so much more than I ever thought I was. I have completely changed my attitude about body image and what I want to look like. It has made me proud of having muscles! I have a much healthier outlook and have learned to listen to my body.
What is your favorite / least favorite WOD/movement?
My favorite movement would probably be burpees. I can’t believe I just said that. But I think that’s actually true! My least favorite movement is thrusters. They never feel good.
What do you a do for a profession outside of CrossFit?
I’m a Registered Nurse. I work for a large home infusion company.
What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?
I am passionately involved in dog rescue, specifically pit bulls. That is my other love in life!
Do you eat Paleo, Primal or Zone? What is your favorite paleo/non-paleo meal?
I eat Primal. I try to limit my dairy to raw cheese and plain Greek yogurt. My favorite Paleo/Primal meal right now is probably Paleomg’s Breakfast Stuffed Acorn Squash. My favorite non Paleo meal is definitely pizza.
My real name is ACTUALLY Chandra. Shandy is a nickname compliments of WCCF!
